Email From Client

Hi Brian,

We are one of the very few owners of Allianz’s Long Term Care policy, bought from you in 2000, fully paid off, and hoping to never need to use it. Unfortunately, my husband Bob suffered a severe stroke a week ago.

As of today, he cannot talk or walk and is very weak on his right side. He is currently bedridden in the HCMC stroke center. We don’t know when he’ll be transferred to inpatient rehab or what his recovery will ultimately look like.

As you can imagine, we’re in the midst of a sudden, devastating experience and honestly don’t know how to handle all of this. Here’s how I hope you can help:

  1. Help us understand our insurance benefits.
Our policy plan is X-3000-X-MN(X), policy #5XXXXXXXX.

What benefits are available during hospitalization, inpatient rehab, and after his release? How much coverage is available for assisted living?

Our home is a two-story condo, and staying here will likely be very difficult. I imagine we’ll need to move to assisted living soon.

  2. Any advice or information for transitioning into this new reality?
This could include home care aides, counseling, or anything else that may help.

HCMC will provide some guidance, but I need all the help I can get. Up until now, we’ve been healthy, active, traveling, and enjoying life. I’m struggling to process and adjust to all the changes that are suddenly in front of us.

Please respond by email for now. When I can find the time and energy, I’ll call you. I truly appreciate any advice you can provide.

Sadly,
Mary

Our Guidance — How the Policy Helped

Hi Mary,

I am so sorry to hear about Bob. I can only imagine how overwhelming and heartbreaking this past week has been for both of you. Please know I’m thinking of you during this incredibly challenging time.

I contacted Allianz to review your policy benefits, and the good news is that your coverage has grown substantially over the years.

Your policy currently provides just over $15,000 per month in reimbursement benefits for eligible long-term care expenses.

Eligible services can include:

  • Home health care through a licensed agency
  • Assisted living
  • Nursing home care
  • Other qualifying long-term care services

Even better, your policy is a comprehensive lifetime benefit policy, which is exceptionally valuable coverage.

Your policy does include a 30-day waiting period before benefits begin. Once Bob starts receiving qualifying care services, you can begin the claims process through Allianz.

Allianz Claims Department:
(866) 359-3476

Regarding home care assistance, a local home care agency that has worked well for several of our other clients is:

Armatage Home Care
Owner Matt Bandstra: (515) 418-8285
Office: (952) 207-2952

As for assisted living options, I don’t have a specific recommendation yet, but once things stabilize a bit, we can certainly discuss facilities and possible next steps.

Right now, the most important thing is focusing on Bob’s immediate care and rehabilitation.

You are navigating an enormous life transition very suddenly, and it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed.

HCMC’s social workers and discharge planners can often be extremely helpful in coordinating rehab, home care, counseling resources, and future housing discussions, so I would encourage you to lean on them as much as possible.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out whenever you have the time or energy. I’m happy to help however I can.

Thinking of you and Bob.

Sincerely,
Brian Emswiler, President

Additional Thoughts and Observations

Situations like this remind us just how quickly life can change.

One week, a couple may be healthy, active, traveling, and enjoying retirement — and the next, suddenly facing rehabilitation, home care decisions, assisted living discussions, and major financial questions.

In moments like these, a strong long-term care insurance policy can provide far more than just financial support.

It can help:

  • Preserve retirement assets
  • Create additional care options
  • Reduce stress on family members
  • Allow loved ones to focus on caregiving and recovery instead of financial pressure

While no one ever hopes to need long-term care, planning ahead can provide tremendous peace of mind when life takes an unexpected turn.

If you have questions about long-term care planning or would like to better understand your options, our office is always available to help.
